Isuzu Impulse JR Annual Imports to the USA, 1983-1989

The yearly totals in the following information were taken from "Ward's Automotive Yearbook" from the office of the American Automotive Association (AAA) in West County, St. Louis, Missouri. Model breakdown is based on an approximation based on 25% of total models being 4ZC1 Turbo models, during years that the Turbo charged Impulse was available (Introduced mid-year in 1985), and based on the change from the G200Z SOHC to the 4ZD1 motor mid-year in 1987 in the Naturally Aspirated Impulses. "Ward's" does not list any importation prior to 1983, although three Piazza JR G200Z DOHC models were imported and reverse engineered by Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors. It is possible that others were brought in also. It is also possible that some Impulses were brought over by private individuals from Canada, as well as Piazzas which could have been brought in by private individuals from Mexico, South America, Europe, Australia, Japan, or elsewhere.

* Ward's lists anual sales in a calander year, not actual imports of a specific model year of automobile. There are always cars left on dealers lots after the model year sales period ends, and these sales are counted by Ward's as sales in the next year, though no division is given. This error is minimized in the 1984-1988 model year listings in that the unsold vehicles at the end of the year should be roughly equal to the models left over from the previous year. The 1989 model year, however, would have left unsold vehicles into 1990, the year that Isuzu changed over to the JI model Impulse, and it is anybodys guess as to just how many 1989 models were sold in 1990.
