The entire system is only as strong as its weakest link.
All the performance work in the world will not do a lick of good unless the basic maintenance is taken care of. You will find that each of the following actions will improve the overall function, mileage, performance, drivability, and reduce the emissions of your vehicle, not just Impulses but any vehicle. These tips are also a must when preparing a pre-owned vehicle for your own personal use.
Engine Oil- Replace every 3,000 miles or every six months, whichever comes first.
Oil Filter- Replace every other oil change, every oil change if the vehicle is driven hard.
Spark Plugs- New spark plugs make a world of difference. Isuzu says to replace them every 30,000 miles.
Spark Plug Wires/ Ignition Wires- They were not meant to last the life of your vehicle. They should probably be replaced every 70,000 to 80,000 miles.
Fuel Filter- The single most neglected item on any vehicle. Contaminated fuel is common and clogged filters will starve an engine of fuel. Chances are your fuel filter has never been changed. Replace every 50,000 miles.
Fuel Injectors- No fuel treatment will prevent the build up of deposits on injectors, treatments only reduce the amount of build up by 50% at best. The injectors should be removed and professionally, ultrasonicly cleaned every 70,000 miles, at which time they can be 20-40% blocked, reducing your engines output by 10-30 H.P.
Distributor Cap and Rotor- Wear on these components can prevent full current from reaching the plugs. Replace every 50,000 miles.
Ignition Timing- Timing should be set at 12 degrees BTDC. Many repair shops will inadvertently set your timing to 8 degrees BTDC because they don't know any better. Isuzu specifies 12 degrees BTDC. Incorrect timing adjustment can result in poor throttle response and uneven idling characteristics.
Air Filter- The engine needs good airflow to function properly. A clogged air filter will leave the engine gasping for air. Isuzu says replace every 30,000 miles. Cotton gauze "K&N" type filters should be cleaned and re-oiled at least every other oil change.
Valve Adjustment- If the valves are not adjusted correctly, your engine will not receive the proper valve lift and will not produce its full power potential. Isuzu says check and adjust every 15,000 miles.
Front Wheel Bearings- Additional friction robs your vehicle of forward momentum. Isuzu says repack front bearings every 15,000 miles.
Vacuum Hoses- Vacuum leaks wreak havoc on fuel injection, idle smoothness, and cruise control. Check vacuum hoses for leaks and cracks frequently. Hoses could probably use replacing every 100,000 miles.
Drive Belts/ Fan Belts- Isuzu says check every 30,000 miles.
Antifreeze Coolant- Isuzu says replace every 30,000 miles or two years, whichever comes first.
